Sebastian Agnello, celebrated as one of Canada’s most respected protest guitarists and singer-songwriters, sadly breathed his last in September 2023. Admired widely for his musical prowess, Agnello garnered a substantial fan base, all drawn to his dedication and passion for music. His unwavering commitment to his craft had propelled him into a promising career in the music realm. However, this journey was cut short, leaving fans and fellow musicians grieving his loss.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Sebastian Agnello was a devoted family man—husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle—fulfilling his roles in every relationship with unwavering dedication. His family, announcing the heart-wrenching news on their Facebook page, portrayed him as a gentle soul known for spreading love and positivity. Although his family has confirmed his passing, they have not disclosed the cause, leaving fans and well-wishers contemplating the circumstances of this tragic loss.

Agnello’s love for music was palpable from a young age. At just 12 years old, he showcased his guitar skills at Toronto’s Earl Grey Public School. In the wake of this tragedy, fans and fellow musicians have taken to social media to express their sorrow and extend condolences to Agnello’s family. His musical legacy will endure, serving as an inspiration to future generations of musicians.

Sebastian, at the age of fifteen, embarked on the journey to create his dream band upon arriving in Toronto. He envisioned Spuff—a band capable of delivering four-part harmonies akin to the Beach Boys and Jordainares, soulful leads reminiscent of Stax artists, and a musical fusion ranging from The Rascals/Zappa/Hendrix to Frank Sinatra, sometimes within a single song. To achieve this vision, he enlisted the talents of Clint Ryan, Paul Ryan, and Andy Kelly.

Spuff performed extensively around the world, notably as the opening act for Jimi Hendrix and The Mothers Of Invention, and even released an album under the Mainstream Records imprint in the US. However, the band decided against signing a management agreement with their A&R agent, resulting in the album’s unreleased status and subsequent removal from the label.

The tapes from this period are now considered lost. As the Yorkville Village scene started to fade, Spuff disbanded in the latter half of 1969, and Sebastian, then 17 years old, temporarily stepped away from music while continuing to write.

In 1977, Sebastian founded Patches, a country band, featuring “rock musicians” Real Lanthier (Crowbar), Pinky Dauvin (Stitch n’ Tyme, Lighthouse), Mike Holder, and Jon Lehti, under his own Cabbagetown Records label. They opened for Charlie Pride and Hank Snow, releasing two songs. After Patches disbanded in 1979, Sebastian released an EP of political and philosophical rock songs titled “Ubermensch” under his name. In 1984, he established Sebastian Country, a nine-piece country swing group, releasing the album “Full Moon & Welfare Cheques.” Sebastian’s love for folk roots led him to release an acoustic album titled “this is a protest album” in 1986.
