Sage O’Donnell’s parents left devastated after he died while fighting in Ukraine’s war against Russia before Christmas.
The Russo-Ukrainian War has been going on between Russian and Ukraine for a long time now. As the battle rages on, Russia has continued attacking cities around Ukraine.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Ukrainian servicemen for calling them heroes. Many people, including citizens and soldiers, lost their lives during the war.
Sage O’Donnell is one of them. He died fighting the Russians in Ukraine days before Christmas. Ukrainians admired the Victoria native’s courage and thanked him for defending their homeland with moving tributes.

Who Is Sage O’Donnell? 24 Years Australian Man Died In Ukraine
Sage O’Donnell is a 24-year-old Victorian man who flew to Ukraine to help defend the country in its war against Russia.
The former Australian Army serviceman reportedly died on 21 December. As per the reports, the soldier died near the city of Bakhmut or Novomkil’s’ke – both heavily contested areas of eastern Ukraine.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed Sage O’Donnell’s death.
As per his LinkedIn, O’Donnell enlisted in the Australian Army as a part-time Rifleman and became Artillery Observer until February 2021.
He introduced himself as a young Australian with experience in many fields seeking to build a career in the public service role.
Ukrainian Thanked Sage O’Donnell For Defending Their Homeland
People of Ukraine took to social media to thank the late Australian serviceman for defending their homeland in the war against Russia. They have also paid heartwarming tributes, reported Daily Mail.
Anja Konstantynova, a Lviv resident who organizes care packages for front-line Ukrainian soldiers, thanked him and said the best ones are dying. “worthy husbands, sons, brothers protect us, alas many protected us from heaven.” she wrote online.
A person thanked Sage for his sacrifice, referring to him as a “Chaika” in the comment section. Chaika means Seagull, which was Mr. O’Donnell’s callsign. On the battlefield, both Ukrainian and foreign legionnaires utilize the callsigns.
The late serviceman’s friend Brandon Declan, also from Victoria. While mourning his pal’s death, Brandon wrote, “let’s meet when my time comes.”
Many other people took to social media to thank him for his sacrifice. However, not all people mourned Sage’s death.
It is shocking to know that Russian supporters of the war addressed O’Donnell as a “Nazi Mercenary” and reportedly celebrated his death.
A post on a Putin-supporting page wrote that the Australian mercenary had been eliminated in the SVO zone. Sadly, the post has 4K likes with numerous comments.
A Twitter account called Nazi Merc Tracker – shares and follows the movement of foreign fighters in Ukraine – also made several posts mocking O’Donnell’s death.

The soldier’s mother said that her son had fallen in love with Ukraine and was humbled by the kindness and hospitality within his new community.
The grieving mother added her son – who always believed in defending Ukraine – died in action defending the freedom of the country’s people.
She added that Sage upheld his values as he served in Australia and abroad and described him as a man driven by “empathy for the Ukrainian people” and the “injustice that has taken place.”
On the other hand, O’Donnell’s Father took to social media and said he died fighting Russian President Vladimir Putin.
