The Hartland Arrowhead community is grieving the loss of their esteemed football coach, Tom Taraska, who tragically passed away in a car accident at the age of 71. The accident occurred on Sunday, leaving the community in shock and sorrow.

For nearly three decades, starting in 1982, Taraska was synonymous with Hartland Arrowhead football. He was instrumental in transforming the program into a perennial powerhouse, leading the team to nine state championship games and securing victory four times. In recognition of his outstanding coaching, he was named the Wisconsin Coach of the Year in 2007 and was honored with a spot in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

“Long time teacher and Head Football coach Tom Taraska died in a car accident yesterday afternoon. Those of you who knew him could attest that Tom was a passionate and successful educator and football coach, a great advocate of our school, and had a personality that was unmatched. He not only had a huge influence on Arrowhead but was a titan in the football community in the State of Wisconsin and beyond. His contributions to Arrowhead and our community will be missed by all. Tom lead the Warhawks to state championships in 1993. 1994, 1996 and 2007. He lead the Warhawks as State Runner-Ups in 2000, 2002, 2003. 2006 and 2008. Tom was inducted into the Arrowhead Athletic Hall of Fame in it’s inaugural year,” Arrowhead High School Alumni shared on official page.

Taraska was more than a coach; he was a mentor and a friend to many. Known for his intimidating exterior, those who got to know him found a gentle and kind-hearted individual. This sentiment was echoed by prep sports broadcaster Bob Brainerd, who described Taraska as a person of immense kindness and humility.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday when Taraska’s vehicle struck a tree in Merton. He was the sole occupant of the car. A growing memorial, adorned with a football helmet, now marks the site where the community pays their respects.

Current coach Matt Harris reflected on Taraska’s enduring impact on the community, acknowledging that without Taraska, many would not be where they are today. The football stadium itself bears his name, a testament to his legacy in the sport and the community.

Taraska’s influence on football started long before his coaching career, during his time as a student-athlete at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1975. Over his illustrious coaching career, he accumulated numerous accolades and victories, shaping the lives of countless student-athletes.

As investigations into the tragic accident continue, the community mourns the loss of a true legend, a man who dedicated his life to the game and inspired generations of athletes. Taraska’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched and the legacy he leaves behind at Arrowhead High School.
