John Lee Cowell, then 27, followed them and launched a brutal knife attack. Nia tragically lost her life, while one sister survived with severe injuries.

Cowell’s history of extreme violence and mental health issues came to light, as he had been previously released from a maximum-security facility for mentally ill convicts months prior. Following the attack, he was swiftly apprehended by authorities with the help of surveillance footage.

Due to his mental health challenges, Cowell’s trial was delayed for nearly two years. Diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, his defense attorney presented his medical records as part of a plea bargain. In July 2019, he was deemed competent to stand trial.

In a significant verdict on July 17, 2020, a jury found Cowell guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Nia Wilson. He was handed a life sentence without the possibility of parole and is currently serving his sentence at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville.
