Waterloo, IA — The Waterloo community is grieving the loss of Terry Joe Shay, a revered music educator, who passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at the age of 59. Born on August 6, 1964, in Oelwein, Terry dedicated 37 years of his life to teaching vocal music, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students.

Terry was a proud alumnus of the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He embarked on his teaching journey in Lost Nation and Plainfield, before concluding his remarkable career at North Tama in Traer, where he taught for an impressive 33 years, retiring in May 2023. On December 28, 1996, Terry exchanged vows with Ellen Marie Bast at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.

He was not only a teacher but a beacon of inspiration for his students. Terry’s passion for music education led him to initiate International Dot Day in September 2009, a global event encouraging children to embrace their creative potential. This initiative garnered participation from youngsters across the globe.

In his retirement, Terry continued to contribute to the literary world by founding the Dot Connector, a venture that facilitated authors in connecting with schools for personal visits. His interests extended beyond music and literature, as he found joy in cycling and assisting people in any way he could.

Terry is survived by his devoted wife, Ellen, and his mother, Shirley Shay of Oelwein. He is also fondly remembered by siblings Maurice Gene “Morey” Shay Jr and Debbie (John) Shirkey, both of Oelwein, parents-in-law Jim and Mary Bast of Waterloo, and brother-in-law Todd Bast of Grimes. Additionally, a host of nieces, nephews, and numerous friends cherish his memory.

Graveside services honoring Terry Joe Shay will take place on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, located at 3430 W 4th Street, Waterloo. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates memorial contributions for the establishment of a scholarship in Terry’s name. Waterloo and the educational community at large will forever be touched by his passion, dedication, and the lasting impact he made through his teaching career.
