In addition to being a former president and COO of Theranos, a privately held health technology firm created by his then-girlfriend Elizabeth Holmes, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani is an American businessman who has been found guilty of fraud.

He was the second-most significant player in the demise of Theranos, which had deceived investors by claiming to have developed a new blood test that only required a tiny bit of blood, like that from a fingerstick.

Due to its dubious claims and procedures, Theranos began to face public criticism in 2015.

In the end, the Company was liquidated. Federal officials filed criminal charges against Balwani and Holmes for running the Company as a multi-million dollar fraud operation against clients and investors.

Sunny Balwani, a former Theranos Executive, was found guilty of all 12 fraud counts brought against him due to his work with the now-defunct blood testing business.

After tough questions were raised about Theranos’ blood testing technology over eight years ago, the ruling ends the final chapter of the Company’s legal saga.

Balwani’s conviction also represents a harsher verdict than his former lover and business partner, Elizabeth Holmes, who was found guilty of only four of 11 exact charges in January.

At one point, Holmes had overseen the Theranos lab and invested millions of his own money into the Company.

Holmes was found guilty of scamming investors but not defrauding patients; in contrast, Balwani was found guilty of all allegations, including those that were patient-specific.

Following a 13-week trial that detailed Balwani’s involvement with the medical tech Company that was expected to transform the field of medicine, jurors in San Jose, California, made their verdict public on Thursday.

The panel, composed of five men and seven women, took 32 hours to deliberate before deciding at noon.

The 58-year-old businessman, who had entered a not-guilty plea, could now spend up to 20 years behind bars.

On September 26, Holmes will be sentenced while free on bail. On November 15, Balwani will receive his sentencing.

Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, a former Theranos Executive, was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison on Wednesday for his involvement in the Company’s blood-testing hoax.

This sentence is slightly longer than that of the CEO, who was also an accomplice in one of the biggest scandals to hit Silicon Valley.

Balwani, 57, was found guilty in July of conspiracy and fraud related to the Company’s phony medical technology that harmed patients and defrauded investors.

His sentence came less than three weeks after the Company’s founder and CEO, Elizabeth Holmes, 38, was given more than 11 years in prison for her involvement in the scheme, which has been the subject of a book, an HBO documentary, and an award-winning TV series.
