The tight-knit community of Purvis, Mississippi, is grappling with a profound sense of loss following a tragic car accident on the morning of August 30, 2023, that claimed the life of a promising young individual. Pearl River Valley Coroner Derek Turnage confirmed the heartbreaking news that 19-year-old Skyla McGlown had lost her life in a single-car accident.
The accident occurred around 6 a.m. on U.S. Hwy 11, between Lumberton and Poplarville, as Skyla’s car overturned while negotiating a curve. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

I’m beyond speechless. I never knew her personally, as in we were not close, but I will never forget that gorgeous smile of hers. I remember finding out she moved from Salem and wished that she could’ve stayed there till I left. I know US-11 well being as I made MANY of trips up and down that highway and know that it is dangerous, especially at night. Skyla Mcglown was someone who I never saw sad. She made me realize a lot of things including to live my life to its fullest and always look up at the bright, positive. At least, that’s what I remember thinking every time I saw her smiling. From this day on, no matter what, I will live MY LIFE to its fullest and always stay positive like Skyla. Yeah I know I may hit some bumps in the road, but it’s ok! That can happen! You will be missed by so many and the memories of you will last a lifetime

Skyla McGlown had recently graduated from Purvis High School in 2023 and had just embarked on a new chapter of her life by enrolling at Pearl River Community College (PRCC). Her bright future was tragically cut short, leaving her community and loved ones in shock and mourning.
