Noel Kinsella, a distinguished Canadian politician and former Speaker of the Senate of Canada, passed away today, Wednesday, December 6, 2023. Kinsella, a native of Saint John, New Brunswick, died at the age of 84. The cause of death has not been reported.

Noel Kinsella was born in Saint John, New Brunswick. He pursued his undergraduate studies at University College in Dublin, Ireland, where he earned a BA in psychology. Subsequently, Kinsella continued his academic journey at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas Angelicum in Rome, obtaining a doctorate and a doctor of law in 1965. His dissertation, titled “Toward a Theory of Personality Development: A Study of the Works of Erik H. Erikson,” showcased his deep understanding of the subject.

Kinsella furthered his commitment to learning by earning an S.T.L. and an S.T.D. from Rome’s Pontifical Lateran University. With 41 years of dedicated service, he served as a member of the Board of Governors and a professor at St. Thomas University, where he also chaired the Atlantic Human Rights Centre.

On September 12, 1990, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney appointed Kinsella to the Senate of Canada as a New Brunswick senator. In 2004, he joined the Conservative Senator group and served as the Senate Opposition Leader. Kinsella assumed the role of Senate Speaker on February 8, 2006, following Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s proposal to the Governor General. He held this position until November 26, 2014, when he resigned as Speaker ahead of his mandatory Senate retirement at the age of 75.

Kinsella, known as a Red Tory, supported Peter MacKay’s 2003 Progressive Conservative Party leadership run. In December 2008, he became an honorary captain in the Royal Canadian Navy. Kinsella was also honored as a knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. On February 23, 2015, he became a member of the Canadian Queen’s Privy Council.

The Conservative Party expressed its condolences, stating, “Our Conservative family has suffered a loss with the passing of the Honourable Noël Kinsella. His quick wit, measured intellect, and commitment to public service garnered Senator Kinsella a reputation worthy of admiration.”

Canada mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant, Noel Kinsella, who made significant contributions to the political landscape of the country.
