Sun Prairie, WI – Madison, Wisconsin, has been deeply affected by the tragic passing of Deputy Robert Canfield, a respected member of the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. The heartbreaking news was shared via a poignant social media post, expressing gratitude for Canfield’s contributions to the Sheriff’s Office and the Lafayette County community.
Canfield’s untimely demise occurred in a traffic accident at the intersection of US Highway 51 and County Highway K on a Sunday morning. Investigators revealed that the incident involved a collision between Canfield’s vehicle and a semi-truck. Regrettably, Canfield, a 76-year-old Sun Prairie resident, succumbed to the impact of the accident at the scene.
According to reports, the accident unfolded when Canfield attempted a left turn onto Highway K, intersecting with the path of the oncoming semi-truck. The driver of the semi-truck emerged unharmed from the collision, while a section of Highway 51 underwent a nearly five-hour closure for investigation and cleanup.

“A sad day in Lafayette County. My old courtroom partner, Robert Canfield passed away in a traffic accident over the Weekend. Bob was a great guy to work with. Rest in Peace Bob, I thank you for all you did for our Sheriff’s Office, and the people of Lafayette County.”
Multiple agencies, including the Oneida County HAZMAT Team, Oneida County Ambulance Service, Lifelink Helicopter, and various local fire and police departments, collaborated with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office at the scene to manage the situation and ensure safety.
Hailing from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and a graduate of Chippewa Falls High in 1965, Robert Canfield was esteemed for his calming and compassionate demeanor. Described as a beacon of serenity and a source of comfort, Canfield’s unique and humorous nature endeared him to everyone he encountered.
