He was 93 years old at the time of his passing, which is believed to have been due to natural causes.
Richard Davis was born on April 15, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois. He embarked on a remarkable journey in the world of music that spanned over several decades, leaving an indelible mark on the jazz landscape. His impact extended beyond music, as he was a passionate advocate for social change.
His career took him from Chicago to New York City, where he spent 23 years establishing himself as one of the world’s premier bass players. Notably, he was ranked as the Best Bassist in the Downbeat International Critics Poll from 1967 to 1974. His mastery of the bass led him to perform and record with an illustrious list of artists, including Sarah Vaughan, Eric Dolphy, Don Sebesky, Oliver Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Frank Sinatra, and many others.
Richard Davis was equally at home in the world of classical music, having performed under the batons of renowned conductors like George Szell, Leopold Stokowski, Igor Stravinsky, Pierre Boulez, Gunther Schuller, and Leonard Bernstein. His versatility as a musician allowed him to captivate audiences worldwide, performing in countries such as Japan, Europe, Russia, South America, and more.
In 1993, he founded the Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists, Inc., an organization dedicated to nurturing young talent. This foundation conducted annual master classes for bassists aged 3-18, leaving a lasting impact on the next generation of musicians.
