Detroit, MI – The Detroit church community is mourning the loss of a revered figure, Senior Pastor Rev. Charles Adams, who passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family. The news was shared through a heartfelt Facebook post that resonated within the Detroit and Hartford Memorial Baptist Church communities, expressing the magnitude of the loss.

The cause of Rev. Charles Adams’ death remains unknown, leaving the community in deep sorrow as they remember the impactful role he played in baptizing, memorializing, officiating marriages, and christening countless individuals and families.

Rev. Charles Gilchrist Adams was not only a spiritual leader but also an esteemed scholar. Graduating with honors from the University of Michigan and Harvard University, he furthered his academic journey as a doctoral fellow at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

From 1962 to 1969, Dr. Adams served as the Pastor of the historic Concord Baptist Church in Boston before assuming the role of Pastor at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit. In 1991, he played a pivotal role in the Seventh General Assembly of the World Council of Churches, advocating for the Council’s resources to combat global racism, particularly in the U.S.

Dr. Adams received recognition for his impactful contributions, with Ebony Magazine honoring him as one of the nation’s 15 greatest Black preachers in 1984 and again in 1994. He was also included in Ebony’s list of the top 100 most influential Black Americans.

Beyond his pastoral duties, Dr. Adams demonstrated leadership as the President of the Detroit Branch of the NAACP in 1984, serving on its Executive Board in subsequent years. He was the Conference Preacher for the 1993-94 Hampton University Ministers Conference and received twelve honorary doctorates from colleges and universities nationwide.

Dr. Adams addressed international audiences, including a notable appearance before the United Nations, where he spoke on the issue of South African Apartheid. His remarkable achievements also include receiving the prestigious “Rabbi Marvin Katzenstein Award” from the Harvard Divinity School.
