The harrowing events began when law enforcement officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant for cruelty to animals at the aforementioned residence around 7:30 a.m. Unfortunately, their noble efforts were met with gunfire from the suspect inside, resulting in injuries to three officers. Fortunately, all sustained non-life-threatening injuries, although a fourth officer was also injured during the altercation.
The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, remains barricaded inside the residence, turning the situation into an ongoing crisis. While negotiations are underway and police maintain communication with the suspect, the area has been cordoned off, urging residents and bystanders to steer clear of the vicinity until the situation is resolved.
As a precautionary measure, nearby schools, including Plummer Elementary, Garfield Elementary, and Nalle Elementary, were placed on alert status, while KIPP DC Public Schools enacted secure status, prompting restricted entry and exit. The safety of students and faculty remained paramount, with classes continuing until an early dismissal was arranged at 2 p.m.
Road closures were swiftly implemented in the vicinity, disrupting traffic on Benning Road, G Street, and Southern Avenue, among others, to facilitate law enforcement operations.
