Ian Hanke, a former ministerial aide to Reith, released the following statement: “It is with deep sadness that we confirm that following a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s illness Peter Reith died peacefully in the afternoon of November 8, 2022.”

Over his 17 years in office, Mr. Reith served under John Hewson, Alexander Downer, Andrew Peacock, and John Howard.

A former prime minister, John Howard, paid tribute to his “close buddy.” According to Mr. Howard, “the Liberal Party has lost a persistent champion of what it believes in.”

However, Mr. Dutton stated, “He will be remembered most for his boldness in the face of extreme union intimidation, particularly by freeing up the waterfront to ensure Australia had a more productive, forward-looking economy.”

“He was a key figure in developing important workplace reform that prioritized the needs of both businesses and employees.”
