The Michigan State University community is in mourning following the passing of Kathleen Wilbur, the senior vice president for government relations, affectionately known as Kathy. The devastating news of her demise was confirmed through a heartfelt Facebook post, acknowledging her as the first woman to lead three different state departments and highlighting her most recent role as VP of Government Relations for Michigan State University.

Kathy Wilbur’s Remarkable Career Wilbur’s illustrious career was marked by notable accomplishments, beginning at Central Michigan University, where she not only served but also became the first woman to direct three State of Michigan departments. Her leadership journey continued at Michigan State University, where she made significant contributions as a member of the MSU Board of Trustees.

Before her tenure at MSU, Wilbur joined Central Michigan University in 2002 as the vice president for government and external relations. During her time there, she demonstrated her exceptional leadership skills by serving as interim president for a year and later taking on the role of vice president for development and external relations.

A Legacy of Leadership Wilbur’s extensive experience extended to various leadership positions within Michigan state departments, including directorships at the Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services, the Michigan Department of Commerce, the deputy director of the Michigan Department of Commerce, and the director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Beyond administrative roles, Wilbur played a pivotal role as the chief of staff to State Senator William Sederburg, showcasing her commitment to higher education. Her dedication to Michigan State University was further emphasized by her election to the MSU Board of Trustees in 1984, a position she held until 1991.
