James Madison University Suicide: Mourns The Loss Of Another Student, Lauren Bernett

In April, Lauren Bernett, a star softball player who had just been named Player of the Week, took her own life at the age of 20.

Her death was ruled a suicide by the medical examiner’s office. In January, another student, who was not identified, also died by suicide on campus.

JMU President Jonathan Alger issued a statement expressing his condolences and urging students to seek help if they are facing difficulties with mental health issues.

“The tragic loss of another member of our JMU family deeply saddens us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this challenging time.

We know that suicide is a complex and multifaceted problem that affects many people in our society. We encourage anyone feeling hopeless or overwhelmed to reach out for support. You are not alone.”

The university offers various resources for students who need counselling or crisis intervention, such as the Counseling Center, the Dean of Students Office, the University Health Center, and the Campus Suicide Prevention Center.

JMU Aims To Prevent Suicides On Campus

In response to the alarming trend of suicides on campus, JMU has taken several steps to prevent further tragedies and promote mental health awareness among students, faculty, and staff.

The university has implemented a suicide prevention plan that includes training programs, screening tools, outreach events, and peer support groups.

The plan is based on the recommendations of the Jed Foundation, a national organization that works to prevent suicide among college students.
