We pay tribute to a remarkable sailor, George Alvin Porter, who gently sailed into eternal rest at home this past Friday, with great respect and sadness.

He was a rock of strength who sailed the waves of life, outliving your mother by nine years, which is evidence of the unwavering love that kept him steady.

George left behind a remarkable career in the United States Navy, where he proudly served during the 1960s and early 1970s, as well as a deep devotion to his family.

His impact went well beyond the horizon, influencing the paths taken by all who came after him, including the path you took to join the Naval Aviation Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance community.

Family Mourns The Loss

His parents, Alvin and Dorothy, as well as his devoted wife of 31 years, Susan Porter, predeceased him. The family was George’s priority.

He is survived by ten grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, Rachel, Sophia, Max, Mazzy, Daniel, Katie, David, and Linnea, and by seven cherished children, Jacqueline, Steven, Mari, Amanda, Alison, Donald, and Kimberly.

They will sincerely miss his kind disposition, humor, and kind heart. May everyone who knew him be blessed by his memories.

His commitment to supporting operations in Vietnam while serving aboard the USS Constellation demonstrated fortitude in the face of adversity and went above and beyond the call of duty.

In addition to serving in the military, George was a loving family guy who made a lasting impression on his neighborhood.

Time and tide cannot weaken the special tie that you and he have developed because of your mutual love for the Navy and the Maritime Patrol community.

We observe the marine custom of “stopping all engines, lying about smartly and dropping anchor to pay homage” as George Alvin Porter moves into his last shore duty.

A relieved sailor, he stands watch over others, ensuring their restful sleep. Salutations and safe travels, gentleman.

Your legacy endures in the hearts of those you had the honor of sharing the deck with, a legacy of wisdom, leadership, friendship, and knowledge.
