Islamabad – Imran Khan, Chairman of the PTI, made the announcement on that his governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will dissolve their assemblies on December 23 in preparation for new elections. With Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan by his side, Imran made the announcement in a video address.
Imran acknowledged that he had consulted PTI’s lawyers regarding the move and thanked the two provincial chiefs for their cooperation with his party. He also stated that the Constitution forbade elections from being postponed for more than 90 days following the dissolution of an assembly.
Imran stated a month ago that his party would quit the two provincial assemblies to distance itself from the “current corrupt political system.” Leaders of the PML-N and PPP, the main forces behind the Pakistan Democratic Movement government, strongly opposed the decision to dissolve assemblies. In the event that the PTI continued with its decision to dissolve the two assemblies, the PML-N later made the announcement that it was prepared to participate in elections.
Imran elaborated on the PTI’s strategy for following the dissolution of the assemblies, saying: After that, we will get ready for elections, which will result in approximately 130 seats in the National Assembly. We will then approach the NA speaker and demand that he accept our resignations rather than select a few.
Imran advised the nation not to be disappointed, stating that doing so would be like “running away from our duty to society.” He stated that the government should be dealt “such a loss that the names of these criminals are cleared out until the end of time” and a “example ought to be shown through races.”
He stated that the nation would “stand up” if “tough decisions” were made, not regarding price increases but rather “restructuring institutions and establishing justice in the country .” According to Imran, a government with a new mandate and the support of the nation would be able to rise in stature. Imran began his speech by stating that the nation required “fresh and fair elections” because “we fear the country is drowning.”
Imran began his speech by contrasting the performance of his government with the country’s current economic situation. He lamented the country’s ongoing brain drain, stating that skilled professionals were leaving in large numbers.
“Today, I want to know: “Who was in charge of this regime change?” referring to the vote of no confidence earlier this year, which led to the demise of his government, he said.
According to Imran, there was an increase in unemployment and inflation, as well as a decline in foreign confidence in the nation, which led to a decrease in investments.
“Our credits are stacking up. There was only one solution, which we implemented: to boost the wealth of the nation. The government lacks a strategy.”
Imran is worried that the government might try to delay elections beyond October.
Imran stated that the government was “afraid” of new elections out of fear of losing and that free and fair elections were the only solution to the country’s problems.
He voiced concern regarding the possibility that the government will not hold general elections even in October 2023.
