Renowned American-born musician, DJ, and remixer, Goa Gil, has tragically passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023, leaving a deep void in the hearts of many. A pioneer in the goa trance and psytrance movement of electronic music, Gil’s sudden demise has elicited an outpouring of condolences and tributes from across the globe.
Born in 1951, Gil spent his formative years in San Rafael, California, where he immersed himself in the counterculture scene, participating in collectives like Family Dog and Sons of Champlin during the rise of the hippie movement and acid rock. However, feeling disillusioned by the fading musical environment in San Francisco, he embarked on a transformative journey, eventually settling in Goa, India.

It was in Goa where Gil encountered the enigmatic sadhus, ascetic holy men who subsisted on the forest, ash-covered bodies, and what they called the “elixir of the gods.” Embracing their way of life, Gil became a sadhu himself, assuming the name Baba Mangalanand and becoming a disciple of Mahant Nirmalanand Saraswati within the Juna Akhara order.
