The singer was raised in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She attended Goldsboro High School and went to Howard University to become an entertainment lawyer but graduated with a degree in music & drama.

The singer is the second Black woman to win Miss Goldsboro. In 1995, she crowned “Miss New York.” The actor competed in the 1995 Miss America and was a finalist in the top ten.

As a survivor of sexual abuse, the beauty pageant winner supported several programs to raise awareness against child sexual abuse and was the spokesperson of the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NYSCASA).

In 1996, due to her continuous efforts and activism, former governor Pataki passed the Goldsby-Miss New York Law (reforming legal criteria for child molestation so that abusers are appropriately prosecuted).

Unfortunately, the opera singer was stripped of her Miss New York title due to some complaints from the pageant officials.

Goldsby has graced some of the most prestigious halls and art centers, including the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts as a trained soprano singer.

The actor’s son, Muhjahid Jr., is a 15-year-old classical pianist. Her daughter, Niambi, is an 11-year-old dancer, singer, visual artist, and actress.

Goldsby was previously married to Muhjahid Jr’s Father, Muhjahid Qahhar.

The singer took her husband’s last name and was introduced as Helen Goldsby Qahhar in 2009 during a performance at the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

However, the couple seems to have amicably separated now. The singer takes great pride and joy in being a mother and describes it as “one of the best gigs in the world.”
