Minneapolis, MN – In a tragic turn of events, Andre Debonaire McNeal, the esteemed founder and executive director of the Doorstep Foundation, has passed away due to a car accident. He left us on November 5, 2023, and the news of his untimely death has deeply saddened his family, friends, and the community.
Known for his contributions to the Twin Cities entertainment scene, Andre McNeal was a proud Black man from Chicago who made a profound impact during his time in Minnesota. He was renowned for his role in starting, supporting, and promoting venues, events, and artists over the course of several decades. His work transformed the careers and trajectories of many individuals, earning him the title of Minnesota’s King of Clubs.
Andre McNeal, also known as the Bad Boy and Bachelor Boy, was the epitome of an “urban” promoter in the Twin Cities. He was responsible for hosting various events, including the Afterwork Jumpoff, Quarter Club, Damn the Jokes, First Fridays, the Takeover, and numerous concerts, with a commitment to sharing the success across the community. His influence extended beyond entertainment as he also played an essential role as a social activist, running two nonprofit organizations: Den Brothers and the Doorstep Foundation. These organizations provided mentorship programs and support to young African American men in Minneapolis, fostering academic success and leadership development.
The Doorstep Foundation offered opportunities for youth to develop skills and pursue successful paths through group activities and mentorship. Additionally, it facilitated access to mental health services for families. McNeal strongly believed in teaching children and teens valuable interaction and social skills, as well as coping skills, particularly in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the subsequent unrest.
Zakia Robbins-McNeal shared grief on social media by saying, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Andre Debonaire McNeal which occurred on Sunday 11/5.
