CEO of Westmoreland Community Action Tay Waltenbaugh dies at 69 in Greensburg

Greensburg, Pennsylvania – The community of Greensburg mourns the loss of Tay Waltenbaugh, the Chief Executive Officer of Westmoreland Community Action, who passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023, at the age of 69. Surrounded by his beloved family, Tay’s departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt by those who knew and worked alongside him.

Confirmation of his passing came through a heartfelt Facebook post that expressed, “Our county lost a great person. We met as I started Unity in the Community of SW PA and outreach which he attended. We are sending our prayers and condolences to the family.”

Born on September 9, 1954, at Fort Benning, Georgia, Tay Waltenbaugh was the son of D. Roebling and Edith (Jack) Waltenbaugh, both of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from Juniata College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Sociology.

Tay’s impact was most evident during his nearly three decades as the CEO of Westmoreland Community Action. Under his leadership, the organization experienced remarkable growth in terms of funding, services, programming, and team members. Tay’s significant contributions did not go unnoticed, earning him recognition from various organizations, including the Greensburg/Jeannette NAACP and the Mary Riegler-Chislaughi Friend of the Poor Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. He was also honored with the Top 100 People in Central Pennsylvania and Beyond award from Pennsylvania Business Central and the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award from Seton Hill University.

Tay’s legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments, as he leaves behind a profound impact through his altruistic volunteer work for various organizations. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Brenda L. (Krisfalusi) Waltenbaugh; three children, TR Waltenbaugh (Michelle), Lane Waltenbaugh (Elizabeth Morris), and Kara Gardner (Josh); two grandchildren, Jace and Kendall Gardner; his sister, Enid Waltenbaugh, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and community members are invited to pay their respects at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg, from 1 to 8 PM Wednesday. A funeral service will take place at 10 AM Thursday in the funeral home, officiated by Rev. John M. Smaligo. A celebration of Tay’s life will also be held at a later date, allowing friends and colleagues to come together in remembrance of a leader and advocate who dedicated his life to the betterment of the community.
