Brownsville, Texas – The city of Brownsville is reeling from the loss of Ben Neece, a prominent figure renowned for his service as a former City Commissioner and Municipal Court Judge. Neece passed away in December 2023, surrounded by his beloved family. His passing was confirmed through a poignant Facebook announcement that conveyed deep sorrow over the loss of the esteemed public servant.
Although the specific circumstances surrounding his demise remain undisclosed by the family, Ben Neece’s legacy as an influential figure in Brownsville remains profound.
Neece’s educational journey commenced at Brownsville High School, where he completed his high school education in 1973. He continued his pursuit of knowledge at UTB-TSC, graduating with honors in 1975, followed by studies at St. Mary’s University in Texas, where he completed his education in 1977. Later, Neece honed his meditation skills through programs at Harvard and Texas Southmost College, culminating in a law degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1981.

His illustrious career spanned 32 years as a judge in the Municipal Court, with a substantial portion spent as the Presiding Judge. Throughout his tenure, Neece showcased unwavering commitment to the City of Brownsville. Notably, he served as the City Commissioner for District 4 from 2017 to 2021, furthering his contributions to the community.
Beyond his legal and civic roles, Neece was a multifaceted individual, displaying musical talents as the Lead Guitarist and Vocalist for The Earthmen, a renowned rock band. Concurrently, he contributed to charitable endeavors while holding the position of Chief Executive Officer at Spanish Main Traders, Ltd.
Additionally, Neece served as the Lead Counsel at the Law Office of Ben R. Neece from August 1984 to December 2016. His multifaceted contributions epitomize a life dedicated to public service, with a fervent passion for both music and the legal system.
