While announcing the deaths on Sunday, the park, one of 37 national parks in the country, revealed on its Facebook page that a bear attack was reported to Parks Canada Dispatch through GPS around 8 p.m. MT on Friday.

This was a rare and unfortunate event, as grizzly bear attacks are uncommon and rarely fatal. As a result, it has garnered massive public and media attention.

Parks Canada has not officially released the names and identities of the couple who died in the bear attack.

However, a family friend and close relative, Kim Titchener, revealed that the victims were a married couple and their beloved dog.

Ms. Titchener is the founder of Bear Safety and More. In an interview, Kim Titchener said, “The pair were in a very remote area.”

As more people venture outside, bear encounters are growing, but deadly attacks are few, stated the family friend.

It’s basically simply that more people are going outside and, regrettably, aren’t aware of this, which is why we’re seeing more attacks, she added.

Moreover, the attack reportedly occurred in the Red Deer River Valley, where Parks Canada dispatched the Wildlife Human Attack Response Team in response, according to a post by Banff National Park.

At 1 a.m., the team discovered two “deceased individuals” after traveling on foot because the weather did not permit helicopter travel.

A bear that “displayed aggressive behavior” was also found, and Parks Canada put it to death.

According to a Facebook post, Sundre Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrived at the scene at 5 a.m. and took the victims to Sundre, Alberta. As a result, the reported bear assault location was shut down.

The park boasts of stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and numerous outdoor activities. However, visitors should also be aware of the presence of bears in the park, especially during the fall season.

According to Reuters, Banff National Park is home to grizzly and black bears, often seen roaming around the park in search of food before they hibernate in the winter.

According to Parks Canada’s wildlife conflict specialist Jon Titchener, the park has about 60 grizzly bears, considered a threatened population in Alberta.

The park also has about 40 black bears, which are smaller and more adaptable than grizzlies.

Both types of bears can pose a risk to human safety if they are provoked or surprised, so visitors are advised to follow some precautions when exploring the park.

These include carrying bear spray, making noise, traveling in groups, and keeping safe from bear sightings.

In case of a bear attack, Parks Canada has a rescue team that can respond to emergencies, even in remote areas and harsh weather conditions.

By respecting the bears and their habitat, visitors can enjoy a safe and memorable experience in Banff National Park.
