Azam Swati sparks controversy for his tweet as he gets arrested by FIA. 

Azam Khan Swati, a politician and businessman from Pakistan, comes from the Swati tribe (The most prominent land-owning tribe of District Mansehra and Battagram). From 2006 to 2011, he was Pakistan’s senator and federal minister for science and technology. 

He was chosen to serve as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-senior Insaf’s vice president.

During his time in the country, Swati ran a chain of stores, served in the Pakistani American Congress, and participated in prominent philanthropic activities. 

He was born in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in Mansehra. He became a member of Jamiat Ulema-e Islam.

On December 17, 2011, Azam Khan Swati left the Senate, and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

When Swati aggressively pursued the Hajj corruption case in the Supreme Court, the former religious affairs minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi was ultimately fired by the administration.

On the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ticket, he was once more elected to the Senate in the 2018 election.

From April 18, 2019, to April 6, 2020, he was the Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs in Prime Minister Imran Khan’s administration.

Senator Azam Khan Swati, the PTI’s leader, was detained once more on Sunday for disparaging top military commanders.

Early Sunday morning, the PTI leader was apprehended from his farmhouse in Chak Shahzad, Islamabad.

Swati was detained by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime Wing for insulting the army head and other top military officers, according to sources.

According to sources, a first information report (FIR) was made against him due to his tweets.

The senator insulted the army chief and several senior military personnel on Twitter, garnering ire from the political and social establishments.

Swati used derogatory language against Major General Faisal Naseer and the departing Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

The PTI senator mentioned major General Naseer’s name, who warned him he would pay the price.

“I’ll challenge Major General Naseer on every possible level. In a social media post, Swati declared, “I will utilize every legal and moral arena against him.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, Faisal Karim Kundi, denounced the comments.

The PTI leader could only speak on social media, according to Kundi, who added that the goal of such utterances was to appease the hostile governments.

The SAPM stated, “If he has any evidence, he should provide it, and if it holds water, then we are standing with him.”

Azam Swati Arrest And Charged Due To His Tweet

The FIA has detained the PTI leader twice due to his controversial tweets.

Swati was taken into custody by the FIA last month and brought before a court from his residence in Islamabad.

The senator has been granted bail involving surety bonds worth Rs. 1 million. The government has petitioned the Islamabad High Court to revoke Swati’s case-related bail.

The FIA filed a first information (FIR) report in response to the state’s complaint via Technical Assistant Aneesur Rehman of the Islamabad Cyber Crime Reporting Centre (CCRC).

Imran Khan, the chairman of the PTI, denounced the arrest and said he was “shocked and appalled” by how quickly the country was turning into “not just a banana republic, but a fascist state.”

Swati was detained in October for tweeting criticism of government institutions. Shireen Mazari, a top PTI politician and former minister for human rights, issued open letters to international human rights organizations after his detention, pleading for his quick release.

The PTI leader emphasized Swati’s detention and “subsequent abuse” in an open letter to the Human Rights Committee in Geneva and the Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (by Human Rights Council resolution 34/19).

She wrote that Pakistan had been plunged into a political crisis following a “regime change conspiracy” to overthrow Prime Minister Khan’s administration and install an opposition-led coalition with a bloated cabinet primarily made up of people on bail.

As she continued, “despite a concerted effort of rigging by the government, the Election Commission of Pakistan, and the State,” the government, “backed by the Establishment,” responded with repressive measures following the PTI victory in a series of by-elections held on July 17 in the province of Punjab.

Outside Banigala Chowk in August 2022, Islamabad Police detained Dr. Shahbaz Gill, a former special assistant to the prime minister for political communication, for “making statements against state institutions and inciting the people to rebellion.”

He was the subject of a case opened at the Kohsar Police Station in Islamabad. According to reports, the FIR was amended to include allegations of inciting people against government officials and institutions.

After receiving bail from the Islamabad High Court (IHC), he was released in September.
