A White 84-year-old homeowner, Andrew Lester shot Ralph Yarl late on April 13th, 2023.
On Monday evening, Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson held a news conference to announce that an 84-year-old White man named Andrew D. Lester is facing two felony charges.
One charge is for first-degree assault, which carries a potential life sentence, and the other is for armed criminal action.
Thompson stated that there was a racial component to the case but did not provide further details.

Andrew Lester Shot Ralph Yarl
A 16-year-old Black teenager named Ralph Yarl was mistakenly shot by a homeowner in Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday night when he went to the wrong address to pick up his siblings.
The case has been submitted to the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office, and prosecutors will decide whether the suspect will face charges.
According to reports, officers arrived at the scene on Thursday night after a 911 call was made by someone who believed the person who had shot Yarl was at a nearby address.
The 16-year-old boy was found in front of a nearby house. Officers approached the address and observed shattered glass on the front storm door with Lester standing inside.
Lester provided written consent for a search of his residence. An officer observed blood on the front porch and driveway and cameras on the house’s south and east sides.
A witness reported hearing an unknown vehicle pull into Lester’s driveway and heard two to three gunshots shortly afterward. They also heard Yarl screaming that he had been shot.

After being shot in the head and arm, Ralph is in stable condition and has been released from the hospital. His family has retained attorneys Lee Merritt and Ben Crump to represent them, calling for justice in the case.
A CSI team found a .32 caliber revolver with two spent shell casings still in the cylinder and live rounds in the chamber at Lester’s home.
According to the probable cause statement, Lester stated he picked up his gun before opening the door and shooting twice within seconds, believing someone was trying to break into his house.

The victim, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, was shot twice and is recovering at home. The case has received national attention, with many expressing outrage and demanding justice, including President Joe Biden and several celebrities.
While some have pointed to the racial component of the shooting, the charging documents do not indicate that it was racially motivated. A GoFundMe to support Yarl’s medical costs has raised over $1 million.
