As reported by News 5 Cleveland, in January 2019, almost three decades after Amy Mihaljevic’s abduction and eventual murder, a woman came forward with a revelation that cast a spotlight on her ex-boyfriend as a potential perpetrator.
Amy was snatched from the mall on October 27, 1989, her remains discovered the following February in a remote Ashland County wheat field, approximately 50 miles from the shopping center. Tragically, she succumbed to a stab wound on the left side of her neck.
The modus operandi of the abduction involved an anonymous caller who convinced Amy to meet him at the mall under the pretense of helping him buy a gift for his mother. Two other girls, who had also visited the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center like Amy, received similar calls around the same period.
In a chilling detail, two of Amy’s classmates remembered witnessing a white male, likely in his 30s, engaging with the 10-year-old at the mall. The man reportedly placed his hand on her shoulder and led her through the parking lot – the last sighting of Amy alive.
When Amy’s lifeless body was eventually located on February 8, 1990, investigators determined that she had been murdered and her body discarded in the field days after her abduction.
Authorities believed that the perpetrator had taken mementos from Amy, including her distinctive turquoise horse-head earrings, black ankle boots, and a black leather binder adorned with “Buick, Best in Class.” These items were reported missing. A white blanket and a thick olive-green curtain were discovered roughly 300 yards away from her remains.
Fast-forward to the present day, when the tipster disclosed that her ex-boyfriend, a man yet unnamed, worked in Bay Village at the time of the incident and had a niece in the same grade as Amy. The woman further shared that she lived with him less than a mile and a half from the shopping center, adding that it was uncharacteristic of him to not return home overnight, as he did the night of Amy’s disappearance. Strangely, he contacted her around 10:00 that same night to inquire about any news coverage related to the abduction.

Following this tip, detectives initiated an investigation into the potential suspect, noting that his appearance matched one of the major suspect composites obtained from witness interviews.
In May 2020, two witnesses who claimed to have seen Amy conversing with a man at the shopping center on the day of her disappearance identified the suspect from a photo line-up.
