A heartbreaking and tragic incident has unfolded involving Alexee Trevizo, a 19-year-old, who has been charged with first-degree murder for placing her newborn baby in a hospital trash can, resulting in the infant’s death.
The investigation began on January 27 at Artesia General Hospital’s emergency room in New Mexico. Trevizo was arrested on May 10 and subsequently released on a $100,000 bond, allowing her to attend her graduation ceremony. Recently, police released body camera footage of Trevizo confessing to her crime in the presence of her mother.
The chain of events started in December 2022 when Alexee Trevizo sought medical attention at Artesia General Hospital for severe back pain. After receiving treatment, she was discharged. However, she returned to the hospital a few weeks later, complaining of the same issue.
According to hospital staff, Trevizo gave birth to a baby inside a locked bathroom and allegedly placed the newborn in a trash can before leaving the scene. Last week, the Artesia Police Department charged Trevizo with first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, and tampering with evidence.
The body camera footage captured Trevizo’s chilling confession, where she admitted, “It came out of me, I didn’t know what to do. I put it in the bag, in the trash bag. I’m sorry, mom.” She further added, “Nothing was crying. It came out with nothing.” A hospital worker in the room confirmed the baby’s death, stating, “The baby’s dead. She killed the kid.” Trevizo’s mother pleaded with her, asking, “What did you do?”
Medical assessments revealed that the newborn’s death was classified as a homicide, as an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Medical Investigator of New Mexico indicated the presence of air in the baby’s lungs at the time of death, inconsistent with a stillbirth.
Trevizo’s attorney, Gary C. Mitchell, claimed that his client was unaware of the pregnancy when she visited Artesia General Hospital on January 27. Mitchell argued against the murder charge, citing discrepancies surrounding the events at the hospital. Despite the charges, Trevizo was released on a $100,000 bond.
