Cape May, NJ – The esteemed Zoo Assistant Director and Veterinarian, Dr. Alexander Ernst, sadly passed away on Friday, December 1st, 2023, at the age of 45. His demise, confirmed through various social media outlets, has left many mourning his loss, though details surrounding the cause of death have not been disclosed publicly.

Alexander’s formative years in Lower Township were marked by a profound love for fishing and animals within his community. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Maine, he pursued his passion, obtaining a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island.

His dedication led him to ascend through the ranks at the Cape May County Zoo, where he earned distinguished roles as Assistant Director and Veterinarian. His infectious enthusiasm and love for his work were often spotlighted in media stories, portraying his excitement and commitment.

Dr. Alexander Ernst is survived by his loving wife of a decade, Kira, and their cherished daughters Lydia and Natalie, alongside his mother Barbara and brother John Ernst. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Ernst.

A Mass of Christian Burial honoring Dr. Ernst will take place on Saturday, December 9, at 11:30 AM at the Parish of St. John Neumann Church of St. Raymond, 800 Bayshore Road, Villas, NJ. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday morning from 10 AM until the Mass at 11:30 AM. A private interment will be held at Tabernacle Cemetery.
