Lawson was born in Hampstead, London, on March 11, 1932, to non-Orthodox Jewish parents. He claimed in a 2010 interview that he only identified as Jewish by lineage.

His mother, Joan Elizabeth (Davis), came from a well-to-do family of stockbrokers, and his Father, Ralph Lawson (1904–1982), owned a tea-selling business in the City of London.

He was the musician Myra Hess’s great-nephew. Following in his Father’s path, Lawson attended Westminster School in London.

He completed his education at Christ Church in Oxford and Westminster School, earning a philosophy, politics, and economics degree.

He had received a mathematics scholarship to Christ Church in Oxford, where he earned a first-class honors degree. The 1960s saw him working as a writer.

From 1974 to 1992, Lawson served as a member of parliament. From 1983 to 1989, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1992, Lawson was appointed a life peer.

The first four kids came from his first marriage with Vanessa Salmon. The pair married in 1955 and separated after 25 years in 1980. In the meantime, they had four children.

Nigel remarried Thérèse Maclear in the same year, but the second marriage didn’t last as they were separated in 2012. They had two children together in 32 years of married life.

Lawson was living in France in 2018 and had requested permission to stay there. But in 2019, he declared that he was selling his home in France and that he was still a UK tax citizen.
