Florence, SC –Florence, South Carolina, bids farewell to Dr. Jay Pearson, a revered figure and recipient of the McLeod Health Educator Mentor Award, following his passing, as announced by his family through an online publication.

A concerned individual’s social media post echoed the sentiment of the community, mourning the loss of Dr. Jay Pearson, renowned for his dedication and kindness, both in his medical practice and personal life.

“Sad to learn of the passing of my fishing buddy Dr. Jay Pearson. Lots of good memories over the last ten years, most of which he shared with his family including his wife Mrs Ellen. A selfless, humble, and downright genuine man… qualities we don’t see often in people and that we all should strive for. Rest easy old pal, we’ll keep the lines tight for ya!”

Born on January 23, 1947, in Vallejo, California, Joseph “Jay” Millard Pearson, Jr., epitomized devotion, faith, and leadership. His commitment to medicine and community service was exemplified during his four-decade tenure at McLeod Health, where he held esteemed positions like Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery, leaving an indelible mark on Bruce Hospital as well.

Among his many accolades were the MUSC Unsung Hero Award and the McLeod Health Educator Mentor Award, highlighting his unwavering commitment to advancing medical education and expertise. He played a pivotal role in establishing the McLeod Breast Health Program, a testament to his dedication to accessible and life-saving healthcare in the Pee Dee community.

Beyond the hospital corridors, Dr. Pearson was a guiding force at First Presbyterian Church for over four decades. His contributions, including spearheading the Men Only Sunday School Class and serving as an active Elder, underscored his unwavering devotion to his spiritual home.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Florence, followed by a reception in the Christian Life Center. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to educational foundations and charitable organizations in Dr. Pearson’s memory.
