Bolanle Raheem Death: What Happened?

Bolanle Raheem was a 43-year-old lawyer and mother of two whose death occurred after a Police officer, Drambi Vandi, on Christmas Day in Lagos, Nigeria, shot her. 

According to eyewitnesses, Bolanle was driving with her sister and nephew when they were stopped at a Police checkpoint. The Police officer demanded a bribe, but Bolanle refused to pay.

This reportedly led to an argument, and the Police officer fired a shot, which hit Bolanle in the head, killing her instantly. The killing of Bolanle Raheem sparked outrage across Nigeria and beyond, with many calling for justice for her and other victims of Police brutality.

Police Officer Drambi Vandi Charged With Murder

Following the killing of Bolanle Raheem, the Police officer who shot her, Drambi Vandi, was arrested and charged with murder.

The case was taken to court, and Drambi Vandi was remanded in custody pending the trial’s outcome.

The trial of Drambi Vandi began in February 2022, and it was closely watched by many people in Nigeria and around the world. The prosecution presented its case, arguing that Drambi Vandi had used excessive force and had no justification for shooting Bolanle Raheem.

On the other hand, the defense argued that Drambi Vandi had acted in self-defense and had no intention of killing Bolanle. After a long and emotional trial, the judge finally delivered his verdict. Drambi Vandi was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
